How to Get CPR Certified in Jamaica

1. Select the Right Course

St. John Ambulance Jamaica offers practical First Aid and CPR programmes for different levels of responsibility and workplace risk.

• Workplace First Aid and CPR
• Intermediate First Aid and CPR
• Pediatric First Aid and CPR
• Basic Life Support
• Medical First Responder training
• Customised corporate and group training

2. Register for Training

Individuals can register for a scheduled course, while employers and organisations can request dedicated group training at their workplace or an approved training venue.

Registration generally requires:

• Full name
• Contact number
• Email address
• Valid identification
• Preferred course and training date
• Payment or approved organisational booking

3. Complete the Practical Training

CPR certification requires active participation. Training includes instructor-led demonstrations, hands-on practice, emergency scenarios, and practical assessment.

Participants are taught how to:

• Recognise cardiac arrest
• Check responsiveness and breathing
• Activate emergency assistance
• Perform effective chest compressions
• Provide rescue breaths where appropriate
• Respond to choking
• Use an automated external defibrillator
• Place a breathing casualty in the recovery position

4. Pass the Assessment

Certification is issued after the participant:

• Completes the required training hours
• Demonstrates the required practical skills
• Participates in course activities
• Passes the applicable assessment
• Satisfies all registration requirements

5. Maintain a Valid Certificate

CPR and First Aid certificates remain valid for the period stated on the certificate. Participants and employers should monitor expiry dates and arrange recertification before the certificate expires. Annual refresher sessions are also recommended for workplaces and persons operating in higher-risk environments, even where the formal certificate remains valid.
